A graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design, Ally Hughes (B.F.A., furniture design, 1999; M.F.A., painting, 2000) first began painting and drawing everything from birds to toys as soon as she could hold a pencil. Her first venture into a career in the arts was as a writer for The Chronicle, primarily writing and reviewing local and SCAD gallery work, and interviewing visiting artists and icons such as Judy Pfaff and Oscar de la Renta. In 2002, she moved to Los Angeles where she became an art director and later a producer for Trailer Park, the city’s largest creative agency. Hughes worked on DVD special features and advertising for such titles as “The Prestige,” “The Good Shepherd” and “Miami Vice” for major industry studios. It was this technical and fast paced creative direction that later proved to be the impetus for her current large and small-scale work. Working in oil on canvas as a medium, Hughes began upon returning to Savannah in 2007 thinking about elements of the home she and her husband, Hue, and two dogs, Buddy and Sampson, moved back across the country to make. Text, layers and writing serve as part of the structure of her paintings, and she now turns to subtly thought-provoking decorative elements and patterns to execute her ideas. Hughes works in SCAD communications, and has exhibited work in Georgia, California and Florida galleries, and her work is displayed in private collections nationwide.
