As an artist, I create work that expands the view of the people I paint and their relationship to those around them. Art is an expression of the artist’s surroundings and how he/she reacts to those surroundings. Creating my work allows me to evaluate my own emotions and express them in a creative outlet. rnMy inspiration is drawn from narratives as well as popular imagery. I find that storylines intertwined with popular symbols, colors, and well-known images create an anecdote that can be triggered by sense memory. rnMy work can be seen as a reflection of my own sense memories. I use these stored images blended with emotions to reignite feelings in viewers that they may have forgotten. rnTo create a follow-through from memory to visual concept I use a pattern much like industrial screen-printing. The work is created by breaking down the values that make up the image. Each particular value is then replaced with its corresponding colors in paint. I choose to paint the images rather than screen-print them, because it brings me personal satisfaction by creating the individual work. Though the essence of personal touch is not there in the application of paint my heart is in every piece. rnMy major influences as an artist are William H. Johnson and Andy Warhol. Though they created their work for very different reasons their styles may be seen as similar. Both artists later in their careers worked with a very flat two dimensional style. This style resonates with me and best visually describes my narrative. rnMy goals as an artist are to always be evolving with new ideas and concepts. I enjoy making people feel and evoking emotions through my work even if the viewer and I do not share the same ideals. Art is the medium where two people can enjoy the same work for two very different and even conflicting reasons.
