Hampton Watts (B.F.A., painting, 2015)
Hampton Watts creates figurative oil paintings that point at the insecurities driving human relations and the mechanisms used for coping in the midst of vulnerability. Much of his exploration is an internal critique of his own numbing in the face of pornography struggles and parents’ divorce, and the understanding that to deaden one emotion is to deaden emotion as a whole.
Watts’s current creations have taken a turn to the narratively ambiguous. Deriving imagery from southern and classical literature, his paintings take a magnifying glass over the discord in human relations and self perceptions. Each toys with the intangible nature of emotion while presenting the experience universal. Images are clearly staged yet pique interest at their disquieting unfamiliarity. Remaining dialogue suggests intrusion upon a uniquely intimate and privileged moment, resonating with vulnerability found in human relation.View All Products
