Jennifer Jenkins came by her entrepreneurial spirit and love affair with fabrics naturally. Her grandmother founded and ran her own fabric shop in Kingsville, Texas, from 1954-66. As Jenkin’s mother grew up in and around the store she couldn’t help but create. This love for making, creating, piecing and composing has been passed along, updated and altered through the generations. During her graduate studies at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Jenkins had the opportunity to intern with nationally renowned quilt designer Denyse Schmidt, where she learned the essentials of running a design business. After completing a series of quilt commissions for SCAD and receiving her M.F.A. in fibers, Jenkins founded Double J Designs, a quilt design and textile goods business. Her funky and minimal approach sets her apart as one of the finest and original young quilters today. rnrnShe is a recipient of the Combined Merit Fellowship and the Nancy N. Lewis Endowed Scholarship awarded by SCAD. She was awarded a partial fellowship to participate in the residency program at the Vermont Studio Center in January 2006. Jenkins has been regularly commissioned to create unique quilts for the president’s office at SCAD. The quilts are then given as gifts to honored guests and supporters of the college from around the country and the world. She lives and works in Savannah, Ga.
