It is everyday inspiration and appreciation for beauty that helps to shape designer Katie Mayer’s collection of jewelry. She received a B.F.A. in the metals and jewelry program from SCAD, but what brought her there was her study of metal sculpture work at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, in Canada. She took all her larger scale metals techniques and started creating jewelry. When she left Canada, she took on an apprenticeship in the Diamond District of her hometown New York City, where she learned the skills that go into the makings of fine jewelry. When 9/11 hit she was laid off and saw it as an opportunity to return to school. Katie currently works as a soft goods stylist for a weekly magazine, but also maintains a studio in Brooklyn, NY. Katie launched her line Kub jewelry in September 2009, in an attempt to follow her dream of designing and making her own jewelry. Katie loves to play with her materials. She is inspired by the challenge of taking objects and manipulating designs to create her pieces. Her greatest reward is coming up with an end result.
