Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Luke is the eldest of five children. While at the College of Wooster, in Ohio, he studied a variety of artistic mediums, including but not limited to photography, sculpture, drawing, and painting. In 2001, Luke enrolled in graduate school at the Savannah College of Art and Design. There he focused on extending the painting process itself (e.g. time of creation) through abstract mixed-media with multiple layers and repetitive movements. Receiving a visiting scholar residency from the Peoples Republic of China, Luke spent one year at the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing, at which time he developed a special interest in performance art and worked as staff for the First Dashanzi International Art Festival of Beijing. Beginning in Spring 2006, Luke held the position of Artist in Residence at the Yew Chung International Education Foundation, functioning as co-international baccalaureate art teacher, extended essay supervisor, portfolio club advisor, and lead coordinator for numerous projects intended to modernize the art curriculum. His students have gone on to study art at several institutions worldwide, including the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Parsons the New School for Design, Pratt Institute, Savannah College of Art and Design, and the University of the Arts London, and received scholarships to the sum of $1,500,000 during the years of 2007-09.rnAware of the many benefits that come with being in academia, Luke plans to continue his work in this setting. His current work explores the tensions of man living in our modern times by demonstrating varied attempts with ‘Absurd Systems’ as a method of creating. Attempting to involve the audience in the process of production, Luke constructs performance based paintings examining physical endurance and foreseeable obstacles and has developed a unique means of documenting physical activity within the confines of physics.
