Born in Salmon, Idaho and raised on the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank, W. V., M.J. Oref left home at 17 years old and began a 28-year professional career that included key management positions at the Art Institutes of Phoenix and California-San Francisco. She has also run a successful intuitive art business since 1992 with commissions received from around the world. In 2004, Oref decided to follow her artistic passion and began her B.F.A. in metals and jewelry from the Savannah College of Art and Design. She graduated magna cum laude from SCAD in Spring 2007. In 2006, she competed with other student jewelers from around the United States and was awarded the coveted Womens Jewelry Association scholarship for her jewelry designs. In addition to metals and jewelry, Oref writes, works in ceramics, and welds sculpture. Her work has been on display at the Savannah Airport, Chroma Gallery, and in Savannah exhibitions such as “Out of the Fire” and at the 2007 Atlanta Gem Jewelry Show. Her lines can currently be found in fine shops in Savannah, Atlanta and Houston. Oref resides in Santa Fe, N.M., with her husband, Bob, and their 21-year-old cat, Noodle.
