Sam Norgard grew up working in her family-run flower shop. By her grandmother’s side, she learned design, quality crafts(wo)manship and humor. She attained a B.F.A. in painting and printmaking, and an M.F.A. in ceramic sculpture. A long career of teaching as well as working in a number of design related industries, she has assembled an unusual array of skills in a variety of media. Her jewelry work provides a forum where she is able to have the freedom to use these skills to explore historical techniques and structures in contemporary settings.rnProcess: The process of working old techniques with new materials unfolds ideas. These ideas become linked to content and the individual piece unfolds. Often, once the new piece is finalized, a series is created investigating various nuances within the same theme. The theme runs its course and a new interest is entertained. Polymer clay pieces utilize ancient bead making and glass blowing techniques and contemporary “over-the-top” beaded works may use combinations of African, Native American, French and Victorian constructions combined with contemporary plastic components. Norgard delights in the adventure of learning and creating and is grateful to the women who, by wearing her jewelry, provide a forum for her work.
