Name: Remington Ryan Wither,rnSchooling: B.S. in engineering, M.F.A. in furniture design;rnHometown: Steamboat Springs, Clo. Ryan Withers’ inherent interest in design sparked during his undergraduate studies at the University of Colorado in Boulder. After graduation, he worked for an architect to explore his interest in pursuing an architectural degree. He feared his creativity and talent would not be nourished by a career in architectural engineering, so after leaving Colorado for the beaches of San Diego he enrolled in his first furniture design course at a local community college. That’s when it hit him that perhaps by controlling the outcome of smaller objects from inception to completion he could make a difference in how people react to the things they own. Based on this theory and his talent, he received a scholarship to study furniture design at the Savannah College of Art and Design. It was there that he met design partner Paul Lewin and laid the groundwork from which Tivi was born. While writing his thesis he began to study sensory mapping and explored different materials and the affects of tactility on an individual’s emotional well being. This is where the idea of designing around the natural properties of materials such as steel, leather and wood became vital to the product not only looking good but feeling good as well. Tivi was born from a love of experimenting as well as creating and it is this energy to satisfy the user on an internal as well as an external level that translates into each piece they create. rnrnName: Paul Lewin;rnSchooling: B.F.A. in fine art;rnHometown: Chicago. Paul Lewin’s background in design began as early as he can remember. As a mechanically inclined child he was fascinated by how things worked and spent hours taking things apart only to put them back together. After high school, armed with his artistic talent and innate creativity he found himself studying furniture design at the Savannah School of Design. That is where he met design partner Ryan Wither. They discovered a shared goal for producing designs that could satisfy the need for function as well as the love of designing around the feel of the materials. Driven by the desire to manipulate commonly used resources such as wood, steel, and leather into undiscovered forms, Tivi has given Lewin an outlet for both his creativity as well as his need for functionality.
