Colleen Critcher

(M.F.A., painting, 2012)

Colleen A. Critcher currently lives in Florence, South Carolina, where she maintains a studio and teaches at Francis Marion University. Critcher is a visual artist fascinated by commodity culture, kitsch and plastic things. Her works routinely explore the images of whimsical figurines, most commonly garden gnomes and dinosaurs. This exploration into seemingly menial material possessions helps to reveal the powerful and emotional significance of such objects within our consumption culture. Critcher inserts herself as a character in a humorous narrative, weaving in reflections about the personal relationships between “things” — a truly complicated web of endless consumerism and human emotion.
